BismarckBismarck, North Dakota
Give Bismarck two nights if you are driving I-94 and want the state museum and the Missouri River; one night is enough if it is only a sleep stop.
Bismarck is North Dakota's capital and second-largest city, about 70,000 people, sitting on the Missouri River where the Corps of Discovery camped in 1802–1804 and where the Northern Pacific Railway crossed. It is a car city: the sights are spread over 10 km, the free state museum is the single best stop, and the river bluffs north and south of town hold Mandan earthlodge villages. Most travellers pass through on I-94 between Fargo and Billings, or use it as a base for the Coteaus and Plains.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: the airport, the capitol, the museum and the river sites are 5–15 km apart and buses are limited. Capital Area Transit (CAT) runs several routes plus a link between the airport and Kirkwood Mall, but service is thin in the evening and on Sundays. Taxis, Lyft and Uber work in town; Taxi 9000 also serves the area. Rental cars are available at BIS.

Newer hotels and retail off State St and I-94 Exit 159; easiest parking and quickest access to the highway.
South Bismarck near Kirkwood Mall
Chain hotels and restaurants, 10 min from the airport; good for a late arrival or an early flight.
Mandan (west bank)
Across the river, 15–20 min from downtown Bismarck; cheaper rooms and a base for Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.

Watch out
Safety
- Winter driving: black ice, blowing snow and road closures on I-94; check the North Dakota DOT road report before you leave.
- Summer thunderstorms bring hail and sudden wind; river sandbars near the bridges get crowded and rowdy on hot weekends.
- The Missouri River has a strong current: children need life jackets, and state law requires a spotter when towing a tube or skier.
- Some historic sites are seasonal (Camp Hancock and the Old Governor's Mansion open mid-May to mid-September) and Buckstop Junction is by appointment only.
- Distances are long: Minot is 160 km (99 mi) north and the nearest Amtrak station, so do not plan a train connection from Bismarck.Distances are long: Minot is 99 mi (160 km) north and the nearest Amtrak station, so do not plan a train connection from Bismarck.
