Bismarck is North Dakota's capital and second-largest city, about 70,000 people, sitting on the Missouri River where the Corps of Discovery camped in 1802–1804 and where the Northern Pacific Railway crossed. It is a car city: the sights are spread over 10 km, the free state museum is the single best stop, and the river bluffs north and south of town hold Mandan earthlodge villages. Most travellers pass through on I-94 between Fargo and Billings, or use it as a base for the Coteaus and Plains.
