Cianjur is a valley town of about 170,000 people on the old Jakarta–Bandung road, halfway between the Puncak pass and Bandung. The town itself is a market and transport stop; what earns a night is the megalithic site of Gunung Padang, 25 km south, and the rice-field hike up Mount Mananggel. Traffic on the Puncak road decides your route, not the town.

Getting around

Angkot (red minivans) run fixed routes in town for a few thousand rupiah; agree the fare before boarding. For Gunung Padang or Mananggel you need a car, ojek or a hired driver — no useful public transport. Buses and shuttles stop on the main road rather than always entering Rawabango terminal.

Watch out

Safety

Cianjur is a provincial town on the old Jakarta–Bandung road; the real risks are Puncak road traffic, mountain weather and unlit trails after rain.
  • Puncak road traffic can add hours on weekends and holidays; the toll detour via Cikampek is often faster then.
  • Gunung Padang is a stepped site with a steep old stairway and a longer easier one; wear grippy shoes and start early.
  • Claims that Gunung Padang is older than the pyramids are disputed by Indonesian scientists — treat the dating as unsettled.
  • Bring cash: small eateries, angkot and site tickets rarely take cards.
  • Mountain trails get slick and misty after rain; turn back if the path is running water.
