Riobamba sits at about 2,750 m in a valley under Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest mountain, and most travellers use it as a bed for high-altitude hikes rather than as a sightseeing city. The centre is walkable, the markets are working markets, and the famous Nariz del Diablo train now leaves from Alausí, two hours south by bus. Come for one night, two if the mountain or the train is the point.

Safety

Riobamba is a normal working Andean city: watch your bag in markets and the bus terminal, use registered taxis after dark, and treat the altitude as the main health risk. Check current local advice before you go.
  • Altitude: the city sits near 2,750 m and Chimborazo trips go far higher — acclimatise in Quito first.
  • Chimborazo weather turns fast; go with a guide and start early.
  • The Nariz del Diablo train no longer departs Riobamba — it runs from Alausí.
  • Some churches open only for services; glass doors let you look in.
  • Hornado stalls vary in hygiene: pick a busy one.
