Riobamba
Give Riobamba 1 night as a Chimborazo base, or 2 if you add the Alausí train; skip it if you only want colonial streets — Cuenca does that better.
Riobamba sits at about 2,750 m in a valley under Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest mountain, and most travellers use it as a bed for high-altitude hikes rather than as a sightseeing city. The centre is walkable, the markets are working markets, and the famous Nariz del Diablo train now leaves from Alausí, two hours south by bus. Come for one night, two if the mountain or the train is the point.
