Avşa is the busiest of the Marmara Islands: a small hourglass-shaped island with sandy coves, two settlements and a summer population that jumps from about 3,200 residents to tens of thousands. It is a Turkish domestic beach destination, not an international one, so English is limited outside hotels. Two nights covers the beaches, the sunset marina and a day trip to a neighbouring island; three nights suits slow swimmers. Ferries run from Erdek on the mainland and, in season, from Istanbul.

Getting around

No car needed: buses and dolmuşes run from the main square by the ferry pier, and the two settlements are about 2 km apart. Roads are in variable repair, so scooters and cyclists should watch for potholes. Walking between Avşa and Araplar is possible but hot and exposed.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime island; the real risks are sunburn, uneven roads and summer drinking. Keep valuables out of sight on the beach and watch for traffic near the pier.
  • Sun is fierce and shade is scarce; use high-factor block, a hat and long sleeves, and stay out of the midday sun.
  • Roads are uneven and drivers give cyclists little room.
  • Island tap water comes from desalination: drinkable but flat; bottled water is the norm.
  • Outside Jun–Sep many hotels and restaurants close and ferry timetables shrink: check sailings before you commit.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: Vodafone is the most reliable, Turkcell is spotty, Türk Telekom weak.
