  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Kenwood is a 1,000-person strip of tasting rooms along CA-12 in Sonoma Valley, between Santa Rosa and the town of Sonoma. There is no downtown: the highway is the town. Two nights covers the wineries, Sugarloaf Ridge and one dinner; a car is close to mandatory, and Highway 12 is not built for walking or cycling.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Drive. CA-12 has no useful sidewalk in Kenwood and is not a safe bike route; Sonoma County Transit route 30 links Kenwood with Santa Rosa and Sonoma a few times a day, check the timetable. For wine tasting, book a driver, a tour van or a rideshare in advance — late-night rides are scarce.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 20–25 min by car

CA-12 west, or Sonoma County Transit route 30

Biggest nearby city: more food, beds and the Charles M. Schulz Museum.

Door to door: 20–25 min by car

CA-12 east through Glen Ellen

Historic plaza, mission and more tasting rooms; pair with a Kenwood afternoon.

Door to door: 45–55 min by car

CA-12 west to US-101 north

Second wine base if you want a walkable plaza and better dining.

Sebastopol

go

Door to door: 35–45 min by car

CA-12 west

Cooler-climate pinot and a small town centre; good half-day.

Bodega Bay

go

Door to door: 1 h–1 h 15 min by car

CA-116 west via Sebastopol

Coast, seafood and fog; a full day out, not a quick stop.

Petalumacaution

Door to door: 40–50 min by car

CA-12 west to US-101 south

Worth it for the historic riverfront, but traffic on US-101 can double the time.

Door to door: 40–50 min by car

CA-12 west to US-101 north

No reason to leave the valley for it unless you are already passing through.

Rohnert Park

skip

Door to door: 30–40 min by car

CA-12 west to US-101 south

Suburban beds and a casino; use it for a cheap night, not a day out.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

CA-12 corridor (Sonoma Highway)

The only real option: inns and a handful of rentals strung along the highway. Walkable to tasting rooms you pick, but no pavement between many of them.

Glen Ellen

5–10 min east on CA-12; a slightly denser cluster of rooms and food, still car-dependent.

Santa Rosa

20–25 min west; far more beds, cheaper rates, restaurants and airport access. Best for a 1-night wine stop.

Watch out

Safety

Kenwood is a low-crime rural strip; the real risks are Highway 12 (no shoulder, fast traffic), drinking and driving, and summer heat on exposed trails. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
  • Highway 12 is the main road and has no shoulder for walkers: drive between wineries or book a driver.
  • Tasting rooms often need reservations, especially weekends and harvest (Sep–Oct); walk-ins get turned away.
  • Rideshare coverage thins out after about 21:00 — arrange your return before you start drinking.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 32 °C; carry water on Sugarloaf and Hood Mountain trails.
  • Cell signal is patchy in the Mayacamas canyons; download maps before you drive.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Kenwood CA-12 strip, Glen Ellen, Sugarloaf Ridge, Hood Mountain.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours and reservation rules for the main tasting rooms, plus eat pages with last orders.
  4. Harvest and hostile-arrival fixtures (Sep–Oct weekends, fog, heat) so gates A–D can go green.
