Kenwood
Kenwood, California
Base in Kenwood 1–2 nights only if you want wineries on foot from your bed; otherwise sleep in Santa Rosa or Sonoma and drive CA-12.
Kenwood is a 1,000-person strip of tasting rooms along CA-12 in Sonoma Valley, between Santa Rosa and the town of Sonoma. There is no downtown: the highway is the town. Two nights covers the wineries, Sugarloaf Ridge and one dinner; a car is close to mandatory, and Highway 12 is not built for walking or cycling.

Get around
Drive. CA-12 has no useful sidewalk in Kenwood and is not a safe bike route; Sonoma County Transit route 30 links Kenwood with Santa Rosa and Sonoma a few times a day, check the timetable. For wine tasting, book a driver, a tour van or a rideshare in advance — late-night rides are scarce.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Highway 12 is the main road and has no shoulder for walkers: drive between wineries or book a driver.
- Tasting rooms often need reservations, especially weekends and harvest (Sep–Oct); walk-ins get turned away.
- Rideshare coverage thins out after about 21:00 — arrange your return before you start drinking.
- Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 32 °C; carry water on Sugarloaf and Hood Mountain trails.
- Cell signal is patchy in the Mayacamas canyons; download maps before you drive.
Kenwood is a low-crime rural strip; the real risks are Highway 12 (no shoulder, fast traffic), drinking and driving, and summer heat on exposed trails. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
