Guyra is a small New England highway town of about 2,000 people, 38 km north of Armidale and 61 km south of Glen Innes on the A15. It is a stop, not a base: the sights are a handful of small museums, a lagoon nature reserve and a big concrete lamb, and you need a car for everything outside Bradley Street. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or sleep one night on the Armidale–Glen Innes run.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town centre is walkable in 10 minutes, but the lagoon, the dam and every out-of-town sight need driving. The nearest car rental is in Armidale. Guyra Taxi must be booked by phone, not hailed.

Guyra is a quiet country town and feels safe day and night; the real risks are highway driving, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and summer bushfire conditions.
  • Distances on the highway are long and mobile coverage thins out on the back roads; fill up and download maps before leaving town.
  • Several sights open by appointment only — phone ahead or you will find a locked door.
  • Kangaroos and livestock on the road at dawn and dusk; avoid night driving on unsealed roads.
