Getting around
Uber and 99 are cheap and the default for tourists. Metered taxis work but confirm rate 1 vs rate 2 (rate 2 applies 20:00–06:00, weekends, December). Buses cost R$4.50 (R$3.90 Sundays) but are slow and unsafe at night. Metrofor lines touch tourist zones but are mainly for locals. Rental cars are only useful for outlying beach day trips.

- Do not walk the beach or seafront after dark with visible phones or cameras; snatch thefts are common.
- Avoid the area between the fish market and Praia do Futuro (port/refinery zone) on foot at any hour.
- Praia do Futuro bus stops after sunset are known mugging spots; take an Uber instead.
- Sea at Praia do Futuro can be rough and occasionally polluted; check locally before swimming.
- Only take taxis with the fare system posted on a rear window; agree price if meter is off.
- Rip currents on urban beaches: swim near lifeguard posts.
