Scams and watch-outs

- Praia do Futuro bus stops after sunset are known mugging spots; take an Uber instead.
- Sea at Praia do Futuro can be rough and occasionally polluted; check locally before swimming.
- Only take taxis with the fare system posted on a rear window; agree price if meter is off.
- Rip currents on urban beaches: swim near lifeguard posts.
Fortaleza has a real street-crime problem: keep phones and jewellery out of sight, use Uber at night, and treat the seafront and Centro as daytime-only. Main risks are snatch theft, not violence against tourists.
