Mont-Joli is a small Gaspésie town of about 6,300 people at the eastern end of Autoroute 20, and it works as a transport hinge rather than a sight. VIA Rail's Ocean train, Orléans Express buses and Mont-Joli Airport (YYY) all meet here, so it is a practical first or last night on the Gaspé Peninsula loop. Two hours covers the church and the town murals; the real draw is what lies within an hour by road.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes, but the station, the airport and the Sainte-Flavie motels are 4–8 km apart with no useful local bus. Plan on a car, a taxi (Taxi Co-Op de Mont-Joli, +1 418-775-4343) or a motel shuttle. Route 132 runs through the centre and is the road you will use for every side trip.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are winter driving, moose and deer on Route 132 at dusk, and long gaps between services on the peninsula.
  • No local transit: without a car or taxi, the airport and the Sainte-Flavie motels are not walkable.
  • Winter runs Nov–Apr with heavy snow (about 600+ mm of snow in some months): summer tyres are not enough.
  • Small-town hours: many kitchens close by 20:00–21:00 and some places shut entirely outside Jun–Sep.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the peninsula roads; download offline maps before you drive.
