Wonthaggi is a former coal town of about 8,400 people on the Bass Highway, 128 km from Melbourne and roughly 20 km past the Phillip Island turnoff. Almost everything a visitor does sits within a 10-minute drive of the main street, and the coast at Cape Paterson is 10 minutes further. It works as a cheaper, quieter base for the Bass Coast and as a wet-weather stop between Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the mine, the beaches and the neighbouring towns are spread out and buses are infrequent. Three local bus routes run from the Wonthaggi Bus Interchange to North Wonthaggi, South Wonthaggi and Dudley. Car rental is available in town; book ahead in summer.

Safety

A small, quiet town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are the cold, wet Bass Strait weather, wildlife on the highway after dark and swimming at unpatrolled beaches.
  • Underground mine tours run at set times and sell out in school holidays: book ahead and wear closed shoes.
  • The mine is 16 °C underground even on a hot day: take a layer.
  • Mobile coverage is fine in town but patchy out of it unless you are on Telstra.
