Wonthaggi
Give Wonthaggi one night as a Bass Coast base: the State Coal Mine underground tour is the reason to stop, and it needs a booked slot.
Wonthaggi is a former coal town of about 8,400 people on the Bass Highway, 128 km from Melbourne and roughly 20 km past the Phillip Island turnoff. Almost everything a visitor does sits within a 10-minute drive of the main street, and the coast at Cape Paterson is 10 minutes further. It works as a cheaper, quieter base for the Bass Coast and as a wet-weather stop between Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory.

A car is the practical choice: the mine, the beaches and the neighbouring towns are spread out and buses are infrequent. Three local bus routes run from the Wonthaggi Bus Interchange to North Wonthaggi, South Wonthaggi and Dudley. Car rental is available in town; book ahead in summer.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Underground mine tours run at set times and sell out in school holidays: book ahead and wear closed shoes.
- The mine is 16 °C underground even on a hot day: take a layer.
- Mobile coverage is fine in town but patchy out of it unless you are on Telstra.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the Bass Highway at dawn and dusk.
A small, quiet town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are the cold, wet Bass Strait weather, wildlife on the highway after dark and swimming at unpatrolled beaches.
