Târgu Mureș is the cultural centre of the Székely Land, a mostly Hungarian-speaking city in Transylvania with a compact Art Nouveau core, a 17th-century fortress and a good classical concert hall. It is not a first-trip headline; it works as a one-night stop on the Cluj–Brașov line or as a base for Sovata and the Mureș valley. Two nights is the ceiling unless you are here for family or the spa towns.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses are the cheapest option and a day ticket costs a few lei; taxis are metered and cheap by Western European standards, so most visitors use them after dark. Bikes can be borrowed free for two hours at the football stadium against a photo ID and a Romanian-language contract.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, safe city by European standards; the real annoyances are unlit side streets near the stations at night, petty theft on crowded buses, and long, poorly lit walks back from Cornesti after dark. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • The train station is southwest of the centre, not central: budget a taxi or bus for the last leg.
  • Some intercity buses leave from Autogara Voiajor or Siletina, 1–2 km south of the train station — confirm which station your ticket names.
  • Wizz Air has cut and restored TGM routes repeatedly: never book a non-refundable onward leg before the flight is confirmed.
  • Smoking is still common in some clubs and bars; ask for the non-smoking area if it matters.
