Lappeenranta is the main town of South Karelia, on the southern shore of Lake Saimaa and about 25 km from the Russian border. Its old centre is a 17th-century fortress above the harbour, and the core is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers stop in summer, when the harbour, sandcastle and lake boats are active; winter is quieter and cold.
