Gombe is the capital of Gombe State in north-east Nigeria and the seat of the Gombe Emirate, a traditional state covering most of the state. It is a low-rise, spread-out city of markets, government offices and a university, with the Emir's palace as its main landmark and the Dadin Kowa Dam about 35 km east. Most travellers pass through on the Bauchi–Yola road or stop for a night between Bauchi and Yola. There is no beach, no nightlife strip and no museum circuit: you come for the emirate, the market and the dam, and you move on.

Getting around

The city is spread out and walking between sights is not realistic in the heat. Use keke napep (three-wheelers) or taxis for short hops and agree the fare before you get in; for Dadin Kowa Dam or the airport you need a car, a hired driver or a hotel shuttle. Roads are paved on the main axes but unlit at night.
