  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Nigeria ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Nigeria Immigration Service or a Nigerian mission; most visitors need a visa arranged before travel.
  • Nigeria ↗Governments advise against all or all but essential travel to a number of Nigerian states; check your own government's advice for each state on your route.
  • Nigeria ↗Check the yellow-fever vaccination certificate rules for Nigeria before you fly; carry the certificate with your passport.

Bauchi is the capital of Bauchi State and the old seat of the Bauchi Emirate, a walled city from 1805 that came under British protection in 1904. It is a university town of about 690,000 people with a compact centre of 19th-century landmarks, and it is the usual gateway to Yankari National Park. Most travellers pass through on the way to Yankari or Kano rather than staying long.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk in daylight, but distances between the palace, the tomb and the parks are real: use keke napep (three-wheeler) or a taxi for anything over 15 minutes. Agree the fare before you get in. English works; Hausa helps. Roads to Yankari and Kafin Madaki are by car only.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

GRA (Government Reserved Area)

Quietest streets, most hotels and suites; 5–10 min by car to the markets and palace.

Ahmadu Bello Way corridor

Central, walkable to Unity Park and several restaurants; busiest traffic.

Yelwa / State Avenue

Hotel strip east of the centre; useful if you arrive late and leave early.

Watch out

Safety

Check your government's current travel advice for Bauchi State before booking — advisories can cover the wider northeast. Move in daylight, avoid late-night solo outings and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Bauchi State before booking; advisories change and can cover the wider northeast.
  • Rain peaks in Aug (about 380 mm) and roads to Yankari and Sumu can turn rough — go in the dry season.
  • Late-night outings: stay on lit, busy streets and go in a group.
  • Ignore unsolicited e-mail or message offers of help or money; they are a known scam pattern.
  • Carry small naira notes: card machines fail and change is scarce outside supermarkets.
