Bauchi is the capital of Bauchi State and the old seat of the Bauchi Emirate, a walled city from 1805 that came under British protection in 1904. The centre is small enough to walk in daylight, but distances between the palace, the tomb and the parks are real: use keke napep (three-wheeler) or a taxi for anything over 15 minutes. Agree the fare before you get in. English works; Hausa helps. Roads to Yankari and Kafin Madaki are by car only.
