Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave on the Baltic, wedged between Poland and Lithuania and 1,200 km from the rest of Russia. Its German past as Königsberg survives in the cathedral, gates and fortifications; most of the rest was rebuilt after 1945. Two nights covers the centre on foot; three lets you reach the Curonian Spit or the coast.

Getting around
Buses and marshrutkas cover the city at a flat fare (about RUB 24 bus, RUB 26 marshrutka); pay the conductor on buses, the driver on exit in a marshrutka. Trams and trolleybuses fill the gaps. Taxis negotiate rather than meter, minimum about RUB 100; Yandex Go works here. Most lines stop around 22:00–23:00.

Watch out
Safety
- Russian aircraft are banned from EU airspace; flights from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad take a long Baltic corridor detour and cost more than the distance suggests.
- Almost all visitors need a Russian visa; the free 8-day eVisa is not valid at some smaller border crossings, and US, UK and Canadian nationals must apply for a regular visa.
- Traffic police sometimes stop foreign drivers; keep documents in order and do not offer payments.
- Border queues by car from Poland or Lithuania can run to a couple of hours.
- Weather is windy and changeable; carry a rain layer even in July.
