Give Jambi one full day for the Muaro Jambi temples and the riverfront; two nights max. It is a stop on the Sumatra route, not a destination on its own.

Jambi is the capital of Jambi province on the Batanghari river in eastern Sumatra. The reason to come is Muaro Jambi, Sumatra's largest archaeological site, about 18 km northeast of town. The city itself is a working provincial capital with a lit pedestrian bridge, a river park and cheap food. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kerinci or Palembang.

Watch out

Safety

Jambi is a low-crime provincial capital; the real risks are road traffic, wet-season flooding and haze. Use ride-hailing after dark and keep valuables out of sight in angkot.
  • Muaro Jambi has no public transport and no shade: arrange a car and driver and go early.
  • Wet-season rain (Nov–Mar) can flood low riverside roads and slow the airport run.
  • Smoke haze from land clearing can cut visibility and flights in the dry season: check the air quality before you fly.
  • Carry cash: smaller warungs and angkot do not take cards.
