Jambi is the capital of Jambi province on the Batanghari river in eastern Sumatra. The reason to come is Muaro Jambi, Sumatra's largest archaeological site, about 18 km northeast of town. The city itself is a working provincial capital with a lit pedestrian bridge, a river park and cheap food. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kerinci or Palembang.
