Imatra is a small industrial town on the Vuoksi river, 250 km north-east of Helsinki and close to the Russian border. Its one big draw is Imatrankoski, Finland's first tourist attraction, where the rapids are released on a summer schedule because a dam has held the water back since 1929. The town pairs well with Lappeenranta and the Saimaa lakeland, but it is not worth a dedicated trip from Helsinki on its own.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: rapids, park, hotel and pedestrian street sit within about 1 km. A small local bus network covers the rest of town, and a Bluetooth bike-share system runs in summer (about €1.50/hour, €12/24 hours). For Ruokolahti, the spa or the Aalto church you want a car, taxi or a local bus.

Safety

Imatra is a safe small Finnish town; the real issues are winter ice, short daylight and the closed Russian border, not crime.
  • The rapids only flow at scheduled show times in summer; outside those slots you see a dry riverbed.
  • The Russian border is 7 km away and land crossings are closed; do not plan a crossing.
  • Lappeenranta flights are unreliable — confirm before you build a trip around them.
  • Winter daylight is short and some sights run reduced hours; check before travelling Nov–Mar.
