Mikkeli is a small Lakeland town 230 km northeast of Helsinki, on the main rail line to Kuopio. It was the Finnish Army headquarters in World War II, and that history — the HQ museum, the communications centre, Mannerheim's railway carriage — is the reason to stop. The centre is compact and walkable, the market square is one of eastern Finland's busiest, and the surrounding lakes and cottages are the summer draw. Most travellers use it as one night between Helsinki and Savonlinna, or as a base for the Saimaa lakeland.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: market square, railway station and the main sights sit within about 1 km. Local buses run to Anttola and Otava roughly hourly; single city tickets are about €3, longer routes distance-based, payable via the Waltti Mobiili app. Taxis are bookable by phone or app. Joe Scooter rents e-scooters in the centre. A car helps for the lakes, cottages and Astuvansalmi.

Safety

Mikkeli is a calm, low-crime town; the real risks are winter ice and cold, dark unlit roads out of the centre, and lake ice that is not safe to walk on unless locally confirmed.
  • Mikkeli Airport (MIK) has no scheduled flights: do not book it expecting a normal arrival.
  • Many restaurants and bars are chain or seasonal; in winter the terraces and some places close.
  • Cottages are usually geared to week-long stays and often exclude bedding and food: confirm what is included.
