Skip as a base: stay in Bochum or Dortmund and ride the U35 in for the archaeology museum and Schloss Strünkede, half a day.
Herne is a mid-sized Ruhr city between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen, rebuilt around coal and steel and now quiet, green and cheap. Its two draws are the LWL archaeology museum and the moated Schloss Strünkede; everything else is a half-day at most, and the hotels are a fallback when Ruhr cities fill up.
