Herne
Skip as a base: stay in Bochum or Dortmund and ride the U35 in for the archaeology museum and Schloss Strünkede, half a day.
Herne is a mid-sized Ruhr city between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen, rebuilt around coal and steel and now quiet, green and cheap. Its two draws are the LWL archaeology museum and the moated Schloss Strünkede; everything else is a half-day at most, and the hotels are a fallback when Ruhr cities fill up.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Weekday jams on the A42 and A43 around the Herner Kreuz; use the local roads or check traffic first.
- Wanne's Hauptstraße has many empty shops; do not plan a shopping day there.
- Some sights keep short or limited hours: check the museum and castle sites before you travel.
Herne is a calm Ruhr city and normal city precautions cover it. The real friction is weather and logistics: wet grey winters, quiet streets after dark around the stations, and weekday motorway jams at the Herner Kreuz.
