Old Forge is a small Adirondack village of about 750 people on the Fulton Chain of Lakes, and the western gateway to the park. It runs on two seasons: summer, when families come for Enchanted Forest Water Safari and boat cruises, and winter, when snowmobilers and skiers use it as a base. Everything sits along NY 28, so a car is the practical way in and around. Two nights covers the village and one lake day; three nights adds a hike or a paddle.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, trailheads and the water park are spread along NY 28 and the lakes. In summer the Adirondack Scenic Railroad runs from Thendara, and boat cruises cover the Fulton Chain and Stillwater Reservoir. In winter, snowmobile trails connect the village to a regional network.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a tourist village; the real risks are winter driving on NY 28, cold exposure, and swimming or boating on the lakes without a life jacket.
  • Winter lows can be extreme — this area has recorded some of New York's coldest temperatures; pack for well below freezing.
  • Many restaurants and motels cut hours or close in the shoulder seasons (roughly Nov and late Mar–Apr): call ahead.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on back roads and lakes; download offline maps before you drive in.
  • Black flies and mosquitoes are heavy in late spring and early summer — bring repellent.
