Vulcano is the first Aeolian island the boats reach from Milazzo, and the smallest one worth sleeping on. There is no town to wander: the port strip has the mud baths, the crater trail starts behind it, and the rest of the island is black-sand beach and vineyard. One night covers it; two lets you climb Fossa in the cool of the morning and still catch a hydrofoil onward.

Getting around

The island is small and the port strip is walkable: mud baths, bars and the crater trailhead are all within 15 minutes on foot. Mopeds and scooters are rentable in summer; a full-size car is close to useless on the narrow lanes. Licensed taxis exist but rarely charge the meter rate to visitors, so agree the fare first. Public buses run but timetables change often and are poorly posted — treat them as a bonus, not a plan.

Watch out

Safety

Vulcano is a small, low-crime island; the real hazards are the volcano (stay on the marked trail, never enter the fumarole field), the heat in July–August, and the sea at exposed beaches. Emergency number is 112.
  • Sulfur smell is constant near the fumaroles and mud baths; avoid the crater rim if you have asthma or other respiratory problems.
  • Hydrogen sulfide tarnishes silver jewellery and leaves the smell in swimwear for days — wear an old suit and bag it airtight.
  • The mud bath has a small entry fee and a separate shower charge; swimwear is required, not optional.
  • Many hotels and restaurants close from November to March; check before booking a winter crossing.
  • Mosquitoes are present on Vulcano in a way they are not on some other Aeolian islands; rooms often rely on breeze rather than air conditioning.
  • Hydrofoils are much faster than ferries from Milazzo and are the first stop, but summer sailings sell out — book the return leg when you arrive.
