Vulcano Porto (Porto di Levante)

The landing stage, mud baths, most hotels and restaurants within a 10-minute walk. Best for one night with bags.

Porto di Ponente

West-facing strip 5–10 min from the port; quieter, sunset side, still walkable to everything.

Vulcanello

The isthmus north of the port, resort hotels and the marina; 15–20 min walk or a short taxi from the hydrofoil.

Gelso

South coast, a handful of beach places; you need a scooter or taxi to reach the port.

Etiquette

• Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
• Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
• Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
• Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
• Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
• Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
• Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly

Scams and watch-outs

• Sulfur smell is constant near the fumaroles and mud baths; avoid the crater rim if you have asthma or other respiratory problems.
• Hydrogen sulfide tarnishes silver jewellery and leaves the smell in swimwear for days — wear an old suit and bag it airtight.
• The mud bath has a small entry fee and a separate shower charge; swimwear is required, not optional.
• Many hotels and restaurants close from November to March; check before booking a winter crossing.
• Mosquitoes are present on Vulcano in a way they are not on some other Aeolian islands; rooms often rely on breeze rather than air conditioning.
• Hydrofoils are much faster than ferries from Milazzo and are the first stop, but summer sailings sell out — book the return leg when you arrive.
