Redwood City

One night is enough: use Redwood City as a Caltrain base between San Francisco and San Jose, or a half-day for the courthouse square and farmers market.

Redwood City sits mid-Peninsula on Caltrain, roughly 45 min from San Francisco and 40 min from San Jose. Downtown is small and walkable around a restored 1910 courthouse square. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed than SF or Palo Alto, or stop for the Saturday market and a meal.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk suburban city; the real issues are thin late-night Caltrain service and summer heat if you walk midday (check local advisories for car break-ins).
  • Caltrain is commuter rail: late-night and weekend service is thin, so check the last train before a night out in SF.
  • US-101 and I-280 jam at commute hours (roughly 7–9am and 4–7pm); add buffer to airport runs.
  • Summer afternoons can hit the low 30s°C inland while the coast stays cool — layer up.
  • Downtown parking is metered and enforced; use the Middlefield Rd garage for the cinema complex.
