Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
- Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
- Luxembourg ↗Luxembourg is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Luxembourg sources for your passport.
- Luxembourg ↗Public transport inside Luxembourg is free in second class; cross-border trips and first class still need tickets.
- Luxembourg ↗Luxembourgish, French and German are official; English is widely understood in the capital.
- Luxembourg City area ↗Rural buses run less often in the evening and on Sundays: check the return time before you leave the city.

Decide
Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
The old town sits on a rock above two river valleys, so distances are short but the hills and stairs are not. Public transport is free in second class, the airport is about 6 km from the centre, and English works almost everywhere. What goes wrong is timing: many museums close on Mondays, most shops close on Sundays, and weekday hotel prices follow business demand. Four areas cover a first visit.
Fits
- Short city breaks
- Travellers who want free, easy public transport
- History and views over the Pétrusse and Alzette valleys
Does not fit
- Budget hotel hunters (rates are high on weekdays)
- Late-night travellers (quiet after 22:00)
- Wheelchairs on the upper-to-lower-town paths
- 2 days
- Ville Haute and Grund in one day, Kirchberg or the station district the next
- 3 days
- Four areas on foot and by tram, one slow afternoon
- 5 days
- Four areas + a Vianden or Müllerthal day trip by free bus and train
- Don't confuse
- The Ville Haute is the upper old town; the Grund is the low riverside quarter below it, and Kirchberg is the modern European-institutions plateau to the north-east.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Luxembourg Airport, Findel (LUX) (15–30 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Ville Haute: Place d'Armes & the Grand-Ducal Palace: The old town on the rock: Place d'Armes, the cathedral and the palace within a few streets; walk it in a morning or evening.
- Grund & the Bock Casemates: The river quarter below the rock: the Bock Casemates and Neumünster Abbey; a downhill walk in, a climb or a lift out.
- Gare & Avenue de la Gare: The transport hub: trains, trams and the long Avenue de la Gare; use it for arrival, luggage and evening meals, not sights.
- Kirchberg: Philharmonie, Mudam & Fort Thüngen: The modern plateau: the Philharmonie, the Mudam art museum and Fort Thüngen; reach it by tram and plan around museum closing days.
- Sleep area Gare district: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
- Sleep area Ville Haute: suits Families, price band $$$.
- Luxembourg Airport, Findel (LUX), 15–30 min by the usual route.
