Luxembourg City is a two- or three-night stop: walk the Ville Haute and the ramparts in a morning, go down to the Grund by path or lift, and use the free trains and buses for the rest.
The old town sits on a rock above two river valleys, so distances are short but the hills and stairs are not. Public transport is free in second class, the airport is about 6 km from the centre, and English works almost everywhere. What goes wrong is timing: many museums close on Mondays, most shops close on Sundays, and weekday hotel prices follow business demand. Four areas cover a first visit.

- First night: the old town on foot, the palace and Place d'Armes at your door; hills are the price, so pick a hotel with a car-accessible entrance.
Language
Three languages are official: Luxembourgish (the national language, spoken at home), French (administration, road signs, most shops and restaurants) and German (media and school). About half of residents are foreign, so English and Portuguese are also everywhere. Start in French or with 'Moien' (hello) and switch to English.
- 'Äddi' is goodbye and 'Merci' is thank you in Luxembourgish.
- Many restaurant staff are cross-border workers from France; French works best there.
