Lampang sits on the Wang River in Thailand's northern river valleys, about 2 h by train or 1–1.5 h by bus from Chiang Mai. It has over a thousand years of Hariphunchai, Lanna and Burmese layers, a compact old market street by the river, and horse-drawn carriages instead of tuk-tuks. Sights inside town fill a day; the elephant centre and Chae Son hot springs need a second.
