Lampang sits on the Wang River in Thailand's northern river valleys, about 2 h by train or 1–1.5 h by bus from Chiang Mai. It has over a thousand years of Hariphunchai, Lanna and Burmese layers, a compact old market street by the river, and horse-drawn carriages instead of tuk-tuks. Sights inside town fill a day; the elephant centre and Chae Son hot springs need a second.

No tuk-tuks: songthaews run fixed routes in town and can be hired like a taxi, and horse carriages do short tourist loops (60–200 baht, 2026 estimate). Agree the price and whether it is per trip or per person before you get in. Scooter rental near the bus terminal runs about ฿400/day (check).

- Greeting: A wai (palms together, slight bow) to return a greeting; a smile and nod for shop staff; avoid: Waiing children or service staff first — it confuses; hugging strangers
- Head and feet: Keep feet on the floor, sit with legs folded to the side in temples; avoid: Touching heads (even children's), pointing feet, stepping over people or food
