  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Offenbach sits on the south bank of the Main, directly against Frankfurt's eastern edge, and is joined to it by S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S8 and S9 plus tram lines 15 and 16. It is a former leather-industry town of about 122,000 people with Germany's second-highest share of foreign residents after Frankfurt, which shows up in the food. Its two real sights are the German Leather Museum and the Klingspor Museum of typography and book art; the rest of a visit is the Main riverside, the Wilhelmsplatz market and the club strip on Nordring. Hotel rooms cost less than in Frankfurt, and the trade-off is a 15–20 minute train ride each way.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

S-Bahn S1, S2, S8 and S9 link Offenbach to Frankfurt city centre in about 15–20 min; tram lines 15 and 16 run from Frankfurt to the city boundary. Inside Offenbach, buses cover the centre and Marktplatz is the main bus and S-Bahn stop. Buy tickets from the machines at stops or from the bus driver; day and group tickets are sold on board. Everything is in the RMV fare network, so one ticket can cover Frankfurt and Offenbach.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre around Marktplatz and Berliner Straße

S-Bahn, buses and the pedestrian shopping streets on the doorstep; the Sheraton and the Büsing-Palais are here.

Quieter, close to the Leather Museum and the tram into Frankfurt.

Main riverside and Nordring

For the clubs and the river path; noisier at weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Offenbach is a normal German city and safe by day; the usual care applies at night around the Nordring clubs and the station area. Keep to lit streets, watch your bag on crowded S-Bahn trains, and use 112 for any emergency.
  • The main station (Offenbach Hauptbahnhof) is not the centre: Marktplatz is where the S-Bahn and buses meet, so check which stop your hotel is near.
  • Frankfurt trade-fair weeks (Messe) push room prices up in Offenbach too; book ahead.
  • The Nordring club strip is on the industrial riverbank: walk back along lit streets or take a taxi after dark.
  • Ticket machines at small stops may be card-only or out of service: keep the RMV app as a backup.
