Hartford is Connecticut's capital and one of the oldest cities in the US, founded in 1635. Its draw is a tight cluster of literary and museum sights — the Mark Twain House, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and the Wadsworth Atheneum, the country's oldest public art museum. Downtown is walkable and quiet; most visitors come for a day, or use it as a stop on the Amtrak line between New Haven and Springfield. Two nights is plenty.

The Twain and Stowe houses are 2 mi (3 km) west — a 35–40 min walk or a short rideshare. CT Transit buses cover Greater Hartford; the free Dash Shuttle loops downtown on weekdays (check hours).
