Northallerton is the county town of North Yorkshire and a rail junction on the East Coast Main Line, 2 h 30 min from London and about 30 min from York. The town centre is small: a 12th-century church, a market on Wednesday and Saturday, and a good spread of places to eat on High Street. What makes it useful is position: Mount Grace Priory, the Wensleydale Railway, Kiplin Hall and the western edge of the North York Moors are all within a short drive. Without a car, one night is enough.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For Mount Grace Priory, Kiplin Hall, the Wensleydale Railway and the Moors you need a car or a taxi: buses cover Ripon and Darlington only, roughly every couple of hours on weekdays and Saturdays. Taxis are short-hop priced and worth booking ahead for early trains.
