Northallerton
Use Northallerton as a one-night base for the Dales and Moors, not a destination: the town itself is half a day, the sights need a car.
Northallerton is the county town of North Yorkshire and a rail junction on the East Coast Main Line, 2 h 30 min from London and about 30 min from York. The town centre is small: a 12th-century church, a market on Wednesday and Saturday, and a good spread of places to eat on High Street. What makes it useful is position: Mount Grace Priory, the Wensleydale Railway, Kiplin Hall and the western edge of the North York Moors are all within a short drive. Without a car, one night is enough.
