Kerikeri sits at the head of the Kerikeri Inlet in the Bay of Islands, about three hours north of Auckland by road. It is the site of New Zealand's first permanent mission station, so the historic core is the reason to come, and its position makes it a quieter, cheaper base than Paihia for the same day trips. Two nights covers the town and one full day out; a car makes the difference.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable, but the historic sites, the falls and the beaches are spread out: a car is the practical choice. InterCity coaches stop in Kerikeri daily on the Auckland–Whangārei–Paihia run. Local taxis exist but are limited; check with your accommodation before relying on one at night.

Watch out

Safety

Kerikeri is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the roads (left-hand driving, one-lane bridges), river swimming with no lifeguards, and summer sun and sandflies.
  • Left-hand driving, one-lane bridges and narrow rural roads: keep left and expect logging trucks.
  • Sandflies and mosquitoes near the river and estuary, especially at dusk in summer.
  • Swimming holes and falls have no lifeguards; check local advice before jumping in.
  • Many small cafés and shops close early in the evening; plan dinner before 20:00 or cook in.
  • Summer UV is extreme in Northland: cover up and reapply sunscreen.
