Know before you go

The park is free and open from early morning; only the keep, Nishinomaru Garden and some sights inside charge.
The keep is a 1931 concrete rebuild with a museum inside, not an original castle: the walls, gates and moats are the historic part.
Keep entry about ¥1,200 (≈ US$9) for adults (2026 estimate, check); junior-high age and younger free. Cards and IC accepted at the machines (check).
Queues for the keep build from about 10:00 and the lift queue can be longer than the stairs.
In July and August the inner citadel is an open stone plaza with little shade: go before 10:00.

How to do it well

1Come from the west (Tanimachi 4-chōme) or the north-east (Osakajōkōen): the park opens early, so walk the outer moat before the keep opens.
2Enter the inner citadel through Ōte-mon and Sakura-mon; look for the Tako-ishi, the largest stone in the walls, just inside Sakura-mon.
3Be at the keep door at opening; take the lift to the 5th floor if the queue is short, otherwise the stairs, then walk up to the 8th-floor deck and down through the exhibits.
4If the keep queue passes 25 minutes, skip the inside: the walls and moats are the point.
