Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Royan is a seaside resort at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, rebuilt in tropical-modernist concrete after 1945 bombing and now a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire. Five sand beaches, a shell-shaped market, a 600 m seafront arcade and the UNESCO-listed Cordouan lighthouse offshore. It is a beach-and-architecture town, not a museum town: two nights covers it, three if you add the estuary and the wild coast.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre, marina, market and Grande-Conche are walkable in 10–20 min. Carabus local buses run city lines and out to the surrounding resorts; single ticket about €1.40, valid one hour (check current fares). Bikes work well on the flat seafront network and EuroVelo 1. A car helps for the Coubre lighthouse, La Palmyre and the estuary; central traffic jams from mid-June to mid-September.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Cordouan lighthouse

go

Door to door: Half day

Boat tour from Royan marina or Le Verdon-sur-Mer

UNESCO-listed 1611 lighthouse 7 km offshore; weather-dependent, book ahead in summer.

Coubre lighthouse and La Palmyre

go

Door to door: Half to full day

Car or bike, about 20 km northwest

64 m tower with 300-plus steps; pair with the zoo or the wild coast surf beach.

La Tremblade and the Seudre oyster farms

go

Door to door: Half day

Car or bus northwest along the estuary

Oyster shacks and the Marennes basin; eat at lunchtime when they are open.

Saintes

go

Door to door: About 1 h

TER train from Gare de Royan, roughly 40 min

Roman amphitheatre and arch; a wet-day swap for the beach.

La Rochelle

caution

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

TER train or bus, roughly 1 h 30 min–2 h

Better as its own overnight than a return day from Royan.

Bordeaux and the Médoc

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Train via Saintes or Angoulême, or car via the estuary ferry

Too far for a comfortable day return; sleep over.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centre / Front de Mer

Seafront arcade, market and Grande-Conche within a 10-min walk; best for a short stay without a car.

Pontaillac

Casino, surf school and its own beach; 3 km west of the centre, bus or bike.

Foncillon / Le Chay

Quieter beaches below the congress palace and the cliffs; family-friendly, few currents.

Saint-Palais-sur-Mer / Vaux-sur-Mer

Neighbouring resorts 5–8 km west; cheaper beds, need a car or bus.

Watch out

Safety

Royan is a calm, low-crime resort town; the real risks are Atlantic currents and swell at the unpatrolled beaches, summer road traffic, and boat trips cancelled by wind.
  • Central Royan, the beaches and Pontaillac jam from mid-June to mid-September; use the D25 bypass.
  • Parking is paid on the market square and nearby streets, free elsewhere; large lots sit by Notre-Dame and the station.
  • Atlantic swimming: currents and swell at Chay and Pontaillac; lifeguards patrol Grande-Conche mid-June to early September, 11:00–19:00.
  • Cordouan lighthouse is 7 km offshore and reached only by boat tour or private boat; sailings are weather-dependent and sell out in summer.
  • Many restaurants and hotels close outside the season; check before booking a winter trip.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Royan. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Jun–Sep for beach weather; May, Jun and Sep for fewer crowds · avoid Nov–Feb (many places shut, wind and rain); mid-Jul–Aug for traffic and full car parks · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LRH and BOD: last TER/bus departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Front de Mer and market, Port and Foncillon, Pontaillac, Notre-Dame and the station.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Notre-Dame, central market, Cordouan tours, Coubre lighthouse) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
