Royan
Give Royan 2 nights: beach mornings, the 1950s seafront and market in the afternoon, one day out to Cordouan or the Coubre lighthouse.
Royan is a seaside resort at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, rebuilt in tropical-modernist concrete after 1945 bombing and now a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire. Five sand beaches, a shell-shaped market, a 600 m seafront arcade and the UNESCO-listed Cordouan lighthouse offshore. It is a beach-and-architecture town, not a museum town: two nights covers it, three if you add the estuary and the wild coast.

Get around
The centre, marina, market and Grande-Conche are walkable in 10–20 min. Carabus local buses run city lines and out to the surrounding resorts; single ticket about €1.40, valid one hour (check current fares). Bikes work well on the flat seafront network and EuroVelo 1. A car helps for the Coubre lighthouse, La Palmyre and the estuary; central traffic jams from mid-June to mid-September.
