Murtosa is a small municipality on the Ria de Aveiro, split between the lagoon town and the Atlantic beach village of Torreira. It has one of Portugal's highest rates of bicycle use, so the best way to see it is on two wheels. Most travellers pass through from Aveiro or Ovar; one night is enough, two if you want beach time.

Getting around

Bike is the local default: the municipality has five signed walking and cycling paths, and free summer bike rentals run at three locations. Buses from Auto Viação da Murtosa serve the municipality; check current routes and schedules for links between Murtosa town, Torreira and Estarreja station. A car helps for the beaches and the boatyard museum.

Safety

Murtosa is a low-crime rural municipality; the real risks are Atlantic currents at Torreira, unlit cycling paths at night and seasonal restaurant closures.
  • Lagoon beaches are shallow and calm; the Atlantic beach at Torreira faces open ocean — swim near lifeguards in season and follow the flags.
  • Many restaurants close one weekday and shut early outside July–August; check before you drive out.
  • Free summer bike rentals are seasonal and limited — reserve or arrive early.
  • Mosquitoes near the lagoon at dusk in summer; bring repellent.
