Şarköy is a 60 km resort and wine strip on the Marmara coast of Eastern Thrace, 2–3 hours west of Istanbul by road. The town of Şarköy has the hotels and the 24-hour harbour restaurants; Mürefte and Hoşköy have the wineries, the lighthouse and the monastery ruin. It is a domestic summer and weekend destination: Western tour operators and international hotel chains do not feature here, so book direct and expect Turkish-language service outside the bigger places. Two nights covers the coast; three if you add hiking or paragliding above Uçmakdere.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses run along the coast between Şarköy and Gaziköy every 30 min, 07:30–19:00. East of Uçmakdere they are sparse — often one or two morning runs into town and a mid-afternoon return — so they are useless for day trips. There is no public transport on the winding coast road east of Gaziköy. Car rental offices are in Tekirdağ; international visitors do better hiring in Istanbul city or at the airport. Fuel and repairs: nothing until Mürefte on the coastal route.

Mürefte

Wine village with the Kutman wine museum on the waterfront and two campsites; quieter, 20 km west of Şarköy.

Hoşköy

Lighthouse, monastery ruin and the upmarket end of the coast; 1 km south of the village are boutique hotels and a restaurant.

Eriklice

Small village between Şarköy and Mürefte with pansiyon-style beds; good if you want a beach within walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime resort coast and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are the winding coastal road, summer heat, and swimming where there are no lifeguards. Carry cash for small villages and keep an eye on the sea when the wind picks up.
  • The coastal road east of Gaziköy has hairpin bends and occasional rockfalls; no fuel or repair services until Mürefte.
  • The hill route via Ormanlı, Güzelköy and Hoşköy was surfaced in 2023 but has loose gravel and hairpins.
  • Mobile signal weakens east of Şarköy and fades around Hoşköy; none on the coastal road west of Şarköy.
  • No ferries serve the Şarköy coast any more — plan on road or bus.
  • Many small hotels and campsites are seasonal and some listings are dead links: confirm by phone before you commit.
