Stralsund
Give Stralsund one full day and one night: the UNESCO old town and Ozeaneum fit a day, and it works as a stop between Rostock and Rügen.
Stralsund is a Hanseatic port on the Baltic whose Gothic old town, together with Wismar's, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is compact enough to walk in a day, and it sits on the rail line between Rostock and Rügen, so most trips use it as one night or a half-day stop rather than a base.
