Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Swindon is a large Wiltshire town built by the Great Western Railway, about 1 hour by train from London Paddington. The railway heritage is the reason to come: the Steam museum, the Railway Village cottages and the outlet centre in the old works. The town centre itself is ordinary and has had decades of under-investment, so most travellers treat Swindon as a half-day stop or a base for Avebury, the Cotswold Water Park and Bradford on Avon rather than a destination in its own right.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town centre is walkable, but most sights sit more than 45 minutes apart on foot, so use buses. Routes radiate from the Fleming Way bus interchange; Swindon's Bus Company and Stagecoach West run the network. Trains from Swindon station reach London Paddington in about 1 hour and Bristol Temple Meads in about 40 minutes. Driving is easy on the signposted network, but expect potholes and the five-mini-roundabout Magic Roundabout at junction 15.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Avebury

go

Door to door: About 45 min by car (check)

Bus or car via the A4361 (≈ US$6,000); no direct train

Stone circle and henge you can walk among; pair with the Ridgeway.

Salisbury

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Hourly bus from the bus interchange; train connections are limited

Cathedral and Magna Carta; a full day.

Bradford on Avon

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h (check)

Train to Bath or Trowbridge, then bus (check)

Worth it for the canal and Saxon church, but the connection is slow.

Chippenham

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Train west, about 15 min

Market town and a rail junction for Bath and the west.

Trowbridge

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train west, about 30 min

Wiltshire's county town; useful for the Kennet and Avon canal, not a big draw.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Station Road / Fleming Way)

Walk to the railway station, Steam museum and the outlet centre; best for a one-night rail stop.

Old Town

Hilltop area with Wood Street bars and restaurants, about 1.1 km south-east of the centre; quieter and better for eating.

West Swindon (Shaw Ridge / Link Centre)

Chain hotels and parking next to the A3102 (check); needs a bus or car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Swindon is a normal British town; the centre has rough edges at night, so stay in lit areas and avoid the Brunel Centre after dark. The bigger risks are potholes, the Magic Roundabout and wet pavements.
  • The town centre has a reputation for under-investment; keep to lit streets at night and avoid the Brunel Centre after dark.
  • Potholes are common on local roads; drive slowly and watch for cyclists.
  • The Magic Roundabout intimidates visitors: treat each mini-roundabout as a normal one and keep to your lane.
  • Steam museum entry needs booking ahead; check opening days before you travel.
