Swindon is a large Wiltshire town built by the Great Western Railway, about 1 hour by train from London Paddington. The railway heritage is the reason to come: the Steam museum, the Railway Village cottages and the outlet centre in the old works. The town centre itself is ordinary and has had decades of under-investment, so most travellers treat Swindon as a half-day stop or a base for Avebury, the Cotswold Water Park and Bradford on Avon rather than a destination in its own right.

Get around
The town centre is walkable, but most sights sit more than 45 minutes apart on foot, so use buses. Routes radiate from the Fleming Way bus interchange; Swindon's Bus Company and Stagecoach West run the network. Trains from Swindon station reach London Paddington in about 1 hour and Bristol Temple Meads in about 40 minutes. Driving is easy on the signposted network, but expect potholes and the five-mini-roundabout Magic Roundabout at junction 15.
