Kufstein
Give Kufstein one night, or a half-day if you are changing trains: the fortress and old town are done in 3–4 hours on foot.
Kufstein is the first Austrian town south of the Bavarian border, a rail hub on the Inn with a 13th-century fortress above the old town. Almost everything a visitor wants sits within a 15-minute walk of the station, so it works as a stop on the Munich–Innsbruck line rather than a base for a week. The Kaiser Mountains and the Kaisertal valley behind the town are the reason to stay longer.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to fortress funicular is about 10–15 minutes on foot. Four urban bus lines and regional buses cross the town, nearly all stopping at the bus station beside the railway station. Regiorad bike-sharing stations are spread around town, and the Inn cycle path runs through it. Driving into the centre is unattractive: one-way streets, pedestrian zones and paid parking throughout.

Safety
- Fortress opening hours and funicular service vary by season and by event: check the official fortress site before you go.
- Kaisertal has no road access; the walk in is steep in places and the huts close outside the season.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms in the Kaiser Mountains are common: start hikes early and be down by mid-afternoon.
- Some old-town bars and restaurants do not post prices outside; ask before you sit.
- Cross-border trains toward Munich can be busy on Friday and Sunday evenings: reserve a seat if you have a fixed connection.
