  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Inuvik is the end of the Dempster Highway, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, and the most populous town in the Canadian Arctic at around 3,400 people. It is a real town with paved streets, a hospital and a mosque, not a frontier outpost. Most visitors arrive by air via Yellowknife or Whitehorse, or drive the Dempster as a destination in itself. Two nights covers the town; three or more lets you add the Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway or a flight to a national park.

Watch out

Safety

Inuvik is a small, safe town; the real risks are the road and the cold. Do not leave town without supplies, a full tank and a plan for breakdowns.
  • The Dempster Highway is mostly unpaved with few services; carry food, water, spare tires and a full tank.
  • Winter driving on the Dempster can reach −50°C; do not attempt it without Arctic winter experience and preparation.
  • Outside town there is no fuel, food or shelter; go with a guide who knows the land.
  • Book flights and rental cars well ahead; capacity is limited and weather delays happen.
