Dangjin is a west-coast county town in South Chungcheong, about 1 h 30 min by express bus from Seoul, known for the Sollmae Catholic shrine, the Hapdeok reservoir and cathedral, the Gijisi tug-of-war tradition, and Sapgyoho Lake seafood. Sights are spread across several myeon, buses run once or twice an hour, so a car or taxi is the practical way to see it. Most travellers give it one night, or pass through on the way to Seosan or Cheonan.

Getting around

City buses exist but many routes run only once or twice an hour, so check the timetable at the stop before you rely on one. Taxis and a rental car are the practical way to reach Sollmae, Waemok, Sapgyoho and the mountain temples. Hapdeok Station on the Seohae Line opened in November 2024 and ITX-MAUM trains run toward Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do.

Watch out

Safety

Dangjin is a low-crime county town; the real risks are thin bus service, unlit coastal roads at night and winter wind and waves on the Seokmun and Sinpyeong coast.
  • Sights are spread over several myeon; without a car, budget taxi fares or accept a shorter list.
  • Bus frequencies of one to two hours mean a missed bus can cost you an hour of daylight.
  • Coastal roads around Seokmun and Sinpyeong take high waves in winter and typhoon season.
  • Some museums and restaurants close one day a week (often Monday); check before travelling out.
